Art and Soul Festival in Oakland - 2009

The 9th Annual Art and Soul Festival in Oakland will take place next weekend, August 15 and 16. This date is a change from Labor Day weekend in years past, but there will be just as much food, art, music, vendors, kids'activities and family fun! The location is Downtown Oakland so that you can simply take BART without the bother of driving and parking.

Kids Program:
For the kids, there is a Family Fun Zone with carnival rides and bouncers (at an extra cost) along with interactive art, hands-on mural painting, face painters, a fire truck and more.
The festival takes place from 12 noon to 6 pm and the entrance fees are $10 for adults, $5 for 13-17 and 12 and under are free! So, not only do you get music, dance, art and food in once place, but it is really reasonable for a family to attend!

Lindsay Museum

Lindsay Museum is a gem in Walnut Creek. This museum is specifically for all to reconnect and learn about local wildlife up close and personal yet in a safe environment. They say that children appreciate wildlife and their environment much more if they can relate to it. This is a wonderful way to help our children relate to their Bay Area environment. Looking for Sticker Fun?

Are you looking for something to do with your kids this summer? Mrs. Grossman's Sticker Factory is a great place for a family activity and local entertainment during the week in the summer. I have not been there yet myself, but heard great things. The factory is at 3810 Cypress Drive in Petaluma and has tours Monday through Friday from June 8 - September 4 from 9am to 3pm every hour. The tour includes a video by Mrs. Grossman's granddog, a guided tour, a fun sticker activity, a visit to the sticker museum and then a chance to visit the store with a coupon for $3 off stickers of $20 or more. Mother's Day Outings - 2009

There are many ways to celebrate Mother's Day - in family fanfare, with a nice brunch, relaxing at home with the kids, hiking with the family etc. There is no right or wrong way. But, we know that whatever we want to do, most likely WE will have to plan it. Men are just not used to planning social events. Let's face it, we make it too easy for them by doing the social calendar. My husband often asks, "what are we doing this weekend?" to keep up with our activities. Summer Movies

Summertime is almost here! It is often fun to beat the heat and see a movie. It is a great summertime activity. How can you save money when you go to the movies?

Summer Camps & Activities

Hard to believe, but it is that time again...time to think about summer activities and summer camps! Where do you start?! The Camp Fairs have already taken place in March and many of the camps "early bird discount" offers have expired.

Well, first of all, you can start with your local parks and recreation guide. You will find lots of summer day camps and activities for a relatively low price and they are pretty tried and true. Click here for the Fremont Parks and Rec Guide or check out your city's guide.

YMCA is another good choice for a lower-cost option that has great programs and includes extended care for full-time working parents. It not only has day or week long camps, but also has family camps where families can camp together and enjoy time together while learning crafts, meeting new people and enjoying the outdoors.

East Bay Regional Parks has lots of activities year round and has many hikes, nature walks, nature classes etc to check out for the summer.

Of course, swim, tennis, soccer, golf, baseball are all sports that are popular in the summer since they are outdoor sports. Easter is almost here!

People who celebrate Easter have different traditions. They go to church, they spend time with family and friends, they go on Easter egg hunts, they paint hard-boiled eggs, they exchange Easter baskets and the list goes on. As any holiday, the important thing is to take time with your family no matter how you wish to celebrate it. This lays the foundation for traditions that your children will always remember. I remember going to church, going to a neighborhood Easter egg hunt and having ham for Easter dinner. During the holidays, such as Easter, my mom always made sure to invite those who did not have family or friends nearby or in town to spend the day with us so that they could enjoy that sense of familiar tradition too. Free Museum Days at Bank of America

It is nice when you don't have to do ANYTHING to get something for free. If you bank at B of A, this is true! They have free museum days the first weekend of every month through April. All you have to do is show your Bank of America credit card or debit card with your CDL. How easy is that?! We have not participated in this yet as I have always had plans the first weekend, but in March, we plan to take advantage of this great opportunity. There is a list of museums that are a part of this program - not all museums participate. But, still, there are a few big ones that make it worthwhile - Tech Museum in San Jose and deYoung in San Francisco as examples. Fun Runs with the Kids

We just participated in the Fremont Happy Fish Fun Run at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont yesterday and had a great time. It is a benefit run for the Guy Emanuele Sports Fund which supports children's after school programs. It is the 4th year and it was a lot of fun for the whole family. 4-6 year olds run a 1/4 mile and 6+ get to participate in a 1/2 mile race. It is all fun but they still make it realistic. The kids all feel like winners and get goodie bags with their ribbons. The adults can run 10K or run/walk a 5K. While mom and dad are running, they have a supervision area for the kids. They have a few booths and they have some entertainment. Check it out next year! Otherwise, look for the following upcoming runs to do with the whole family and get active in this passive and computer-using, tv-watching, video game-playing society!

Classes for children - something for everyone

The Bay Area is rich in classes for children and children activities. It is just a matter of finding the ones that are right for your children. It is important to provide your children with a variety of classes to inspire an interest or passion and here is a list of some of the classes you can try with your little prima ballerina, Mozart or David Beckham!

Sports -
The best resource for sports classes for little ones is Parks and Recreation in your community. They offer baseball, soccer and basketball for children starting at age 3. This is a great way to encourage coordination and teamwork.

Swim -
Swim classes are a favorite for children. There are many locations for classes from YMCA to Fremont Swim School in Fremont and Livermore to Happy Fish in Fremont and Silliman Center in Newark to Splash Swim School in San Ramon.

Music -
Music Together is well known for its variety in curriculum of music, instruments and dance. There are classes througout the Bay Area and your youngest child can join (ages are birth through 5 years). Gymboree has a variety of classes for young ones. They have music classes for children as young as 6 months through 5 years. There are locations throughout the Bay Area and the teachers seem to always be enthusiastic and enjoy children. Art -
Art classes are a natural for children. They love it! There are a few art classes throughout the Bay Area - Parks and Recreation and Museum for Children's Art are favorites. However, you can also go for single art fun to Color Me Mine. There are locations in Walnut Creek, Alameda, Daly City, Fremont and San Jose. Gym -
Little Gym provides a large studio for lots of tumbling, building of muscles, coordination and self-esteem. They are located in several locations in the Bay Area and have classes for 12 week periods and a variety of ages.

Gymboree has classes for play and tumble using soft child-friendly climbing structures from 6 months to 5 years. Songs and bubbles are incorporated to really give the children an integrated sensory experience. Lots of fun!

For older kids, there are regular gymnastics classes such as Top Flight in Fremont. They give toddlers the exposure to the balance beam, floor stretching, rings, trampoline and bars. Nature -
The Bay Area is rich in parks from Tilden in Berkeley to Rancho San Antonio in Cupertino to Sunol Park in Sunol and everything in-between. These areas provide rich envirments for children to explore, see animals, birds and learn the joy of hiking. For a little older kids, the best place for nature classes is the Jr. Naturalist Program at Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center. There is a registration fee. 4901 Breakwater Ave., Hayward, 510-881-6700. For infants and toddlers, the place to learn is Sulfer Creek Nature Center whose web site is: http://www.hard.dst.ca.us/sc_programs.html. They have a new focus every month and the fee is $7-8 which includes an art project. From age 1 and older.

Dance -
The Little Gym has started offering dance classes so they can be contacted for more information.
