Pumpkin patch visit

If you still have not made the customary annual visit to the pumpkin patch and are unsure where to go, check out Where to find pumpkin patches website. This site is great because it not only gives you a directory of pumpkin patches (with and without hay rides) but it also has the history of halloween, how to pick a good pumpkin, how to carve a pumpkin, pumpkin recipes and more.

Yes, the popular places to go are Half Moon Bay's Pumpkin Festival (this weekend - Oct 17-18) where they have prizes for the largest pumpkin and Uesegi Farms in Morgan Hill with a train ride. But, if they are not close by and you would rather take an hour or so at the patch vs. a half day, then check out G&W Farms in Livermore. They have pony rides, corn maze, big patch, corn kernal play box and hay bale maze.

Art and Soul Festival in Oakland - 2009

The 9th Annual Art and Soul Festival in Oakland will take place next weekend, August 15 and 16. This date is a change from Labor Day weekend in years past, but there will be just as much food, art, music, vendors, kids'activities and family fun! The location is Downtown Oakland so that you can simply take BART without the bother of driving and parking.

Kids Program:
For the kids, there is a Family Fun Zone with carnival rides and bouncers (at an extra cost) along with interactive art, hands-on mural painting, face painters, a fire truck and more.
The festival takes place from 12 noon to 6 pm and the entrance fees are $10 for adults, $5 for 13-17 and 12 and under are free! So, not only do you get music, dance, art and food in once place, but it is really reasonable for a family to attend!

Amusement Park Discounts

Amusement parks are a great way to round out the summer. And, there are discounts out there for these oftentimes expensive destinations. However, there are ways to get discounts.


1. AAA has discounts for many amusement parks including Great America, Vallejo Discovery Kingdom, Disneyland and Legoland. Check their web site for more details.

2. If you have a contact person at your school's PTA, they often have coupons for Legoland, SeaWorld and Great America. The front office will have them too, but obviously, schools are closed until the end of August so you would have had to plan ahead. Check the PTA web site for any additional info on discounts.

3. Many amusement parks have online discounts. Gilroy Gardens has an online discount of $29.99 for everyone. That is a $3 discount for kids and a $13 discount for adults. A family of four could save $32 on admission! Six Flags Discovery Kingdom also has an online ticket special of $29.99. That saves a family of four $30 on admission. Great America now has an online deal of only $99.99 for four tickets which is less than $25 per ticket! Great deals out there! Go get 'em before the summer ends!

Bay Area Fourth of July Activities

There are always so many activities centered around one of the most celebrated and historically important holidays, Fourth of July. However, it is not always easy to find them. If you are looking for fireworks, a parade or fun run, look no further, here are a few tips of things to do. Other than that, just getting together with friends and having a BBQ is one of my favorite ways to celebrate!

For a full, though not complete, schedule of Bay Area fireworks at many of the larger cities, check out the ABC 7 News SF Web Site. This site includes fireworks viewing locations in SF, Oakland, Alameda along with many other cities around the bay!

If you plan on traveling for the 4th, here is a more broad list of fireworks and celebrations in the state of California, check out this site. Or if you are looking for nationwide celebrations, check out this list from Kids-List.

In San Jose's Rose Garden district, they have a neighborhood parade at 10 am and then a bouncy house and face painting for the kids to enjoy. The kids can also participate in the parade if they want to decorate a wagon or their bike. For more info, check out the alameda business association site.

Danville has a parade from 9-1 sponsored by Kiwanis.

San Ramon has a fun run every year too for runners or walkers - 5 and 10k that starts at 8:15 am. Great way to be healthy and celebrate!

American Crown Circus

The circus has come to Newark, CA! A small company called American Crown Circus is performing at the Newark Junior High School this weekend through Monday, June 22nd. What a great way to celebrate Father's Day! The feats are pretty amazing - from tightrope walking to flame-throwing to motorcycle riding in a bubble! It is fun for the whole family. The venue is small too so you get a good view almost everywhere. There are clowns and peanuts and cotton candy to make the circus experience complete. So, if you are looking for some family fun to kick off the summer, check it out! Tickets are $5 for kids (if you have a coupon, they get in free) and $15 for adults. Sunday shows at 4, 6 and 8 pm and Monday shows at 6 and 8 pm. For more information, call 510-793-5683. It is sponsored by the Tri-Cities League of Voters.

Lindsay Museum

Lindsay Museum is a gem in Walnut Creek. This museum is specifically for all to reconnect and learn about local wildlife up close and personal yet in a safe environment. They say that children appreciate wildlife and their environment much more if they can relate to it. This is a wonderful way to help our children relate to their Bay Area environment. Not only do they have exhibits and hands on activities but also classes for more in-depth learning. Visit the Lindsay Museum web site for more information and June 27th is Free Admission Day!

Summer Reading

Summer is a time for rest and relaxation, right?! Well, not always...there are summer camps, summer school, summer activities and most likely a family vacation or two which aren't exactly the vacations we remember as restful. But, it is still good practice and good fun to read during the summer. As adults, we should find time to read during the summer too. Some of us don't necessarily have more time in the summer, but the days are longer, so it feels like it! What about having a family reading night once a week? Everyone grabs a book and heads to the living room or family room and reads together. This way, you are not only modeling good reading behavior but you can help out the kids if they need help with words or sentences and even read a book to them in between some of your reading. And, on those family vacations - it is a great time to bring books to read on the beach, in the tent, in the mountains or as down time in the hotel in between planned activities. Looking for Sticker Fun?

Are you looking for something to do with your kids this summer? Mrs. Grossman's Sticker Factory is a great place for a family activity and local entertainment during the week in the summer. I have not been there yet myself, but heard great things. The factory is at 3810 Cypress Drive in Petaluma and has tours Monday through Friday from June 8 - September 4 from 9am to 3pm every hour. The tour includes a video by Mrs. Grossman's granddog, a guided tour, a fun sticker activity, a visit to the sticker museum and then a chance to visit the store with a coupon for $3 off stickers of $20 or more. Kid-Friendly Places in SF

If you want to stay close to home this summer, you can still make it feel like a family vacation by going to San Francisco with the kids. There are lots of things for the kids to do from riding the cable cars, to playing in Golden Gate park to learning at the Exploratorium. There are even hotels and restaurants that are kid-friendly. Fremont Water Park Opens!

Aqua Adventure in Fremont next to Lake Elizabeth in Central Park has its opening this weekend! And, not a day too soon! Many of us have watched the construction of this water wonderland and wondered when it would open and give us a way to entertain the kids on those hot summer days! For this activity, tickets are very reasonable - $14.99 for Fremont residents over 4' and only $1 more for non-Fremont residents. $9.99 for little ones under 4' ($10.99 for non-Fremont residents) and $2.00 for those 3 years and under (which includes a swim diaper)! There is a pool, a network of water slides and a lazy river...something for everyone. Season Passes are also available.

Earthquakes and Rock

The US Geological Society in Menlo Park is having an Open House from May 16-17th from 10-4 pm. What a great way to spend the day together with an educational family activity! There is no admission fee for this local event and there are dozens of fun hands on exhibits from panning for gold to watching earthquake simulation to becoming a rock detective. Mother's Day Outings - 2009

There are many ways to celebrate Mother's Day - in family fanfare, with a nice brunch, relaxing at home with the kids, hiking with the family etc. There is no right or wrong way. But, we know that whatever we want to do, most likely WE will have to plan it. Men are just not used to planning social events. Let's face it, we make it too easy for them by doing the social calendar. My husband often asks, "what are we doing this weekend?" to keep up with our activities. Earth Day is Wednesday!

April 22nd is Earth Day. This is a great day to remind yourself and teach your children about the values of recycling, conservation and generally taking care of the planet. Quite a few organizations take the opportunity to schedule a clean-up around this time and it is a fun and active way to involve the whole family and reinforce Earth Day values. We went out and helped the SF Wildlife Refuge in Fremont on Saturday and we got a guided tour of the wetlands, the birds and other wildlife as we helped clean up around the bay and refuge. Snow Activities for the Family

Now is the time to head out with your family and go enjoy the snow! We have recently had so much rain and snow, that it is a perfect time to enjoy it as a family! Whether you ski, sled, ice skate or simply build snowmen and make snow angels, it is great to enjoy the snow together as a family. It is another way to bond, get away from life's hassles and get some good exercise. Many resorts want families to visit and try to make it easy with daycare, low price ski tickets for young children and great package deals. You can find warm clothes either through consignment, Target or borrow from friends. And, to make some of the deals even better, you can rent a condo with another family or two and split the costs and make it very reasonable to stay overnight. It is a great family activity. http://www.diamondpeak.com/ - I have not visited this resort, but it actually advertises that it is "your tahoe place for kids". Kids 6 years old and under ski for free and they have interchangeable parent's passes for $49 for the day. However, it is a bit further away and on the NV side.

http://www.sugarbowl.com/ - We visited this ski area prior to having children and enjoyed it then. It is one of the closest resorts and offer "signature kids' programs". Children 5 and younger ski free. This resort also advertises to have other snow activities such as sledding and snow play and snowshoe tours.

http://www.sorensensresort.com/ - We often drive by this resort on our way to ski at Mammoth and often want to stop. But, we have not done so yet. It is small, cozy and very appealing with its activities such as cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing. They have cabins, a restaurant, a small gift shop and lots of open landscape for winter sports.

http://www.squaw.com/ - this world-class resort has not only great skiing, but lots of activities for non-skiers. They offer ice-skating, snow tubing, snowshoe tours and a wonderful top-of-the-mountain spa. It is a bit pricier than the other resorts, but with the amenities, it is worth it.
